a book I found helpful in understanding me and my role is: Me and White Supremacy. I skipped the first part -- and went right to the part where one had to write answers to questions. Highly recommend this book.

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett is fiction but it is a great book to understand the racial perspective and those who "in the 'past" saw passing for White as a way to navigate society. Twins - both very light skinned. One chooses to pass for White the other embraces being Black. Awesome read! Helped me to understand my grandmother.

Do you have suggestions for talking with family or friends who are police officers?
Al
01:05:57
To ensure we have a holistic view of the issues we are facing, I would recommend a reading of Heather Mac Donalds Testimony before the Senate Committee of the Judiciary: The myth of Criminal Justice Racism. Some really outstanding measurable data which is what this should all be about, not emotion and inflammatory rhetoric.

How do we approach the conversation with admin and teachers to change the culture within schools? A lot of these issues even show up in school in the form of inequities.

Do you think that we need to also train American citizens that when a police officer tells one to stop and put their hands up, they should listen. Most of the recent events would have been over if this had occurred. It takes two sides to make a problem.
Mason(he+, BLM)
01:09:51

Frank Hernandez and I have a son who is a police officer in Orlando. He is a military veteran and understands that changes need to happen. We feared for his life in Afghanistan and now we fear for his life as an officer. Another issue is a "theme vs. us" mentality. Young black children voice being afraid of men with a badge, this is also systematic.

01:11:17
There is a recent article about a black man kneeling, following the directions of an officer and the officer told his dog to bite the man. The dog was told to hold for about a minute.
Al
01:11:47
And that police officer should be punished.
Al
01:12:09
But not all police officers are that Police officer.
Fern Aefsky

Schools are asking for support via teachers and administrators to support systemic change and improvement in racial inequities
Latoya Henderson

yes I agree
Fern Aefsky
01:13:17
there are advocacy groups in state and national educational organizations focusing on these issues in schools right now
Latoya Henderson

This discussion seems to be geared towards that hardships of policemen which are true but how about how to address implicit bias and stereotypes with family members and friends
