I've been teaching gen ed courses online for over 15 years. I know where students have challenges in the course work so I spend time during live sessions instructing students how to succeed in those challenging areas for each assignment, ie; critical thinking, evaluation styles, formative analysis. Students then are motivated to come to live sessions to learn success tips.
