ZOOMing Motivation: Strategies to engage students in LIVE sessions - Shared screen with speaker view
Who can see your viewing activity?
This is Nancy Blair....I can't change my sign in name unfortunately.
No, it is not letting us, the last session would not allow it either.
I originally signed in using the login we use for my son's Zoom, so I had to close it out and then sign back in with my okta account.
Kevin...that must be it.
Please mute background noise!
I believe you have to change your name through the ZOOM app
You can change your name here.
click on the those three dots in the upper corner of your picture and you can do it there.
Monkia...that didn't do it....did not have option.
okay. So I have not idea why that is not an option in here
it is a setting the host can disable
I had been in different Zoom sessions over the summer and that was always an option.
It's typically shut off so that people don't use inappropriate/distracting names
UTS has been changing defaults to be a bit more protective I think
That makes sense.
How to sign in using okta?
Can anyone hear anything?
Good Morning Everyone, we will begin in just a moment
Good morning Fern.
This is Nancy Blair
Death by PowerPoint
Can you click on the presentation icon in the bottom left next to "Normal View"?
we can not see anything
Can you share your screen?
Could you put on side mode? It is hard to see.
Galo, the slide mode is not working. We have had a lot of technology issues this morning
we will email or post the whole presentation through CTLE
please mute mic-dogs barking??
that is a good idea about recent phone shot....
Asking students to post their Power Animal would be a fun ice breaker too.
That's a new one for me, too, Kurt
Mine is the gray wolf. It’s power surges through me.
Good Morning Dr. A.....
I like the power animal concept too.
I've been teaching gen ed courses online for over 15 years. I know where students have challenges in the course work so I spend time during live sessions instructing students how to succeed in those challenging areas for each assignment, ie; critical thinking, evaluation styles, formative analysis. Students then are motivated to come to live sessions to learn success tips.
Keya, thanks for sharing well needed information.
My power animal is a Dragon!
What percentage of students come to live sessions?
Yes...isolation does drive participation.
Nancy, why a Dragon?
my classes had 100%! Go Social Studies Ed students!! and Block 2 Middle Grades ED!
Dragon is my Chinese zodiac animal.
Guest speakers are helpful as well.
Going over assignments, verbally breaking them down, explain expectations help drive better understanding of assignments.. A
Yes...we are required to record it.
And reduces emails … if you can predict and address the issues ahead of time.
I have not taught for a couple of sessions so this is all very new to me. Will there be a Zoom link in the website that I use for my course? I teach totally on line.
Yes, Keya...that's critical to help explain the assignments thoroughly.
I find that a majority of students need help breaking down the course work.
Thank you. These are great ideas to use in my classes.
Could you list some ideas for ice breakers?
When you are done recording, zoom automatically creates the transcript? We don’t need to do anything to make it do that?
I usually send them an e-mail and also post it in Announcements in my D2L course.
you can use either the activity tab or just use Zoom to schedule.
St Leo will have a ZOOM tutorial I believe....coming up.
Zoom recordings can be saved to the cloud. You will get an email with all the info.
The Zoom meetings will be recorded.
you can use discussion questions if they are all over
its best to also email them 15 minutes prior to weekly zoom session that class is starting soon. Many simply forget, and the email alerts them last minute.....
Just click on RECORD
Yes I do email them right before. That really helps.
I use Remind to text them
u hate to babysit, but it doubles your participation at times
I use the Remind app too!!!
what is our personal id that the system asks for
Zoom is how I meet up with my family!
Ive never heard of the Remind App. WHat does it do?
I do a movie class and a book club via zoom
you can schedule reminders or announcements to your students. They can either use email or phone to receive it
Susan Sullivan.... I would love to hear about how you do your book club and movie club....sounds fun
Free app.. you can set up classes.
Susan, I went to the tutorial and learned all about it.
It gives you step-by-step instructions.
When you se up the zoom session, it gives you all that information
There will also be half hour Zoom presentations throughout the Summit.
VERY helpful...thanks so much.
This is my first time using it with my gen ed students and they are very patient and grateful.

the link below will assist anyone who currently is unsure on how to navigate through ZOOM.https://faculty.saintleo.edu/news/new-zoom-resources-from-ctle
Students want to know that we are "real" and can relate to them.
Ernest G. Vendrell
Thank you! I appreciate the information and insights.
Thanks so much.
Thank you Fern and everyone.
